Innovation in the Asia Pacific - From Manufactu...

This book promotes the creation of advanced knowledge-based economies driven by innovation networks and the continuous development of human capital and capability. It provides valuable insights into the growing emergence of knowledge-based industries of the Asia Pacific, and highlights research on: modes of creativity and innovation; intellectual property; the components of national innovation systems such as firms, education and training; knowledge and technical infrastructure; and public policy. The Asia Pacific region is currently in the process of transforming from being the manufacturing centre of the global economy to a centre of innovation for the knowledge economy, with the successful IPO of Alibaba in 2014 being a prime example of this shift. From a neo-Schumpeterian perspective, the region is increasingly engaged in shortening and intensifying cycles of innovation. The historic agreement at the Beijing APEC meeting between China and the US to radically reduce carbon emissions indicates that one imperative of this innovation is to contribute to sustainability. The fact that the US Government is moving away from this historic commitment, while the Chinese Government is endorsing the commitment, indicates an emerging opportunity for Asia to lead the world technologically in a vital industrial sector of the future. Thomas Clarke is Professor of Management and Director of the Key University Research Centre for Corporate Governance at the University of Technology Sydney. Global Entrepreneurship and Development Index 2016

This brief captures the contextual features of entrepreneurship by measuring entrepreneurial attitudes, abilities, and aspirations at both the individual- and country-level. Featuring data from the 2016 Global Entrepreneurship and Development Index (GEDI), which measures the quality and scale of the entrepreneurial process in 133 countries around the world, this book provides a tool to help policymakers and governments harness the power of entrepreneurship to address some of the economic challenges faced at the country level. In addition to the yearly data and comparisons, this edition also explores the relationship between entrepreneurship and other measures of development. Distinct from both output-based entrepreneurship indexes (i.e., new firm counts) and process-based indexes (i.e., comparisons of policies and regulations, the GEDI is designed to profile national systems of entrepreneurship. The Index does not simply count new firm registrations nor is it an exercise of policy benchmarking. It also does not focus exclusively on high-growth entrepreneurship; it considers the characteristics of entrepreneurship that enhance productivity, such as innovation, market expansion, globalization, and growth potential. Finally, recognizing that entrepreneurship has a different impact in different economic and institutional contexts, the GEDI combines individual-level data with data that describes national institutions, as well as economic and demographic structures, to provide an institutionally embedded view of the drivers of productive entrepreneurship.

Strategic Innovation in Russia - Towards a Sust...

This book presents a radically different approach to innovation aimed at creating new growth cycles for the Russian economy. To better grasp the opportunities hidden behind worldwide megatrends, such as the growing economic prosperity of Asian countries and the importance of the internet-based economy, the authors argue for a reinvention of Russias innovation strategy. Instead of a purely technology-driven approach, the authors illustrate how the principles of strategic innovation help develop institutional and non-technical innovation, as well as new forms of leadership and entrepreneurship within the Russian business culture. The authors also discuss the impact of strategic innovation on corporate strategies, innovation and economic policy, as well as academic research and development agendas. The book also sheds new light on how cooperation between Russia and the EU, the US and China in the area of innovation can be of mutual benefit. Professor Dr. Taco C.R. van Someren is founder of Strategic Innovation Theory. His PhD (summa cum laude) thesis published in 1991 at the Tinbergen Institute on Innovation, Emulation and Time is one of the first book in this field. Educated as an economist at Erasmus University, he enriched his knowledge as manager in the consumer goods industry, partner at KPMG (The Netherlands), co-founder and Geschäftsführer of Germans KPMG Sustainability, and Professor and guest Professor at Dutch and Chinese universities. He is Seconded Innovation Expert at the European Commission. He founded Ynnovate in 2003. Ynnovate is an international operating investment and advisory company specialized in sustainable growth and creating organizations of the future. It provides tailor-made high level business solutions for governmental and private corporations in sectors such as energy, water, automotive, chemicals, manufactory and professional services. He is author of several books and numerous articles. Dr. Shuhua van Someren-Wang was born and raised in China and lives since 1997 in Europe. She was the first woman in China to receive a PhD on sustainability management (1996) and was the co-founder of the first sustainability advisory organization in China.
